As a professional photographer who travels worldwide, I’ve gathered many solo travel tips and recommendations throughout years of experience. Traveling solo as a woman to another country is not as scary as it may seem.
Sure, there are some countries that a woman will draw attention to traveling solo.
Still, many other friendly places are safe, like Italy.
Traveling to a new place opens up the possibility of learning something new about yourself and the world around you and can often be a deeply personal experience.

Traveling to a new place opens up the possibility of learning something new about yourself and the world around you and can often be a deeply personal experience.
However, traveling with others can sometimes hinder that experience and dampen the personal development travel can offer.
And so, instead, one might turn to Solo Travel.
Solo Travel forces us out of our comfort zone by first moving us away from our immediate support group and venturing off into the unknown by ourselves.
It isolates us in a new territory, either of which on their own is usually enough to have us crawling back to our shells of safety.
But when we travel solo, that vulnerability forces us to open ourselves up to any and all possibilities.
It gives us the freedom to explore the way we want to.
When you solo travel, you’re not bound by anyone else’s itinerary or ideas
other than your own.
You can drift from art museums to historic ruins, taking in every detail you want instead of having to rush off to do something your travel partner wants to do.
If you’re like me, you’re constantly scoping the scene for the perfect shot, and when you’re alone, you don’t have to worry about slowing others down while you stop to snap the perfect photo.
There’s no guilt in enjoying the things you want to enjoy and taking
however much time you want when you’re on your own.
During this time, you can really come to know yourself in a way you have never seen yourself when surrounded by others.
Perhaps I’m biased, but I must say if you’re looking for your first solo travel destination, Italy should be at the top of your list.
Italy is especially perfect for solo travel as it has something for everyone, no matter what your travel style is.
There’s the picturesque Tre Cime di Lavaredo hike along the Dolomites for the outdoorsy adventurer, the Colosseum in Rome, and the archaeological site of Pompeii for the history buff.
It nearly goes without saying that Italy is the destination for Food & Wine Tours.
Whatever you want to see and explore, solo travel allows more freedom and breathing room.
I love traveling with friends or family, but it’s a whole different experience.
My first trip solo was when I was 9 years old when my family sent me to a horseback-riding camp in Surrey, England.
All three of my children at age 9 also took their first Solo trip from Rome to the USA.
Are you thinking of taking a Solo trip to Italy? Want to entrench yourself in the world of Slow Photography in the heart of Tuscany or Rome? I’m hosting two retreats in Italy this coming 2022, both Tuscany and Rome.
