As a destination wedding photographer, every time I’m asked to go to Kauai, my heart skips a beat. Whether it’s to photograph a portrait session, an engagement or elopement, I get super happy. The reasons are many, starting with the Island’s breathtakingly beautiful nature, endless beaches and majestic emerald green mountains. I’ve been visiting the island for quite a few years now, so I’ve gotten to know Kauai well, and I’ve scoped out a number of places that provide spectacular backdrops — perfect for family photo sessions, engagements, weddings and elopements.
Since moving to California from Italy a few years ago, I’ve been able to get to Kauai easily — it’s just a few hours by plane – so it’s been my goal to work there more often. The island is peaceful and stunning, the air is so pure, and every little corner is picture perfect. I’m happy to say that I’ve already photographed six shoots on the island. It’s a dream location for any romantic getaway with scenic panoramas and colors I’ve never seen anywhere else. And Kauai is one of the few the places on earth where you can shoot a beach engagement, elopement or wedding all year long. Add the beautiful culture and happy locals (who couldn’t be happy living there), and you’re surrounded by bliss. When I dream of Paradise, I have visions of Kauai.
Maile and Richard’s Kauai Engagement
The engagement below was photographed around Kauai, mostly in the Hanalei area, at a variety of locations chosen to capture the couple’s love story. Maile was born and raised in Kauai along with her two sisters. She went to California for college, where she met her beloved Richard. She showed me some of her favorite places in Kauai from Hanalei to a waterfall and several beaches. For her engagement Maile chose two dresses — one white and one red — both stunning.
